Do the Sunnis and the Community (Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah) agree on the conditions for the Imam, and what are the details of that according to the Imams of the four schools of thought?
The Grand Imamate (Caliphate) is the highest religious position, and it requires many conditions:
Agreed-upon Conditions: Islam: The leadership of a disbeliever is not valid, because the Imamate is the greatest path for believers. Accountability (Taklif): This includes sanity and maturity. Thus, the leadership of a child or an insane person is not valid. Masculinity: The leadership of women is not valid, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "A people will never prosper who appoint a woman to govern them." Competence (Kifayah): Courage, bravery, and readiness to manage matters of war and politics. Freedom: The leadership of one who is enslaved is not valid.
Disputed Conditions: Justice and Ijtihad (Independent Reasoning): Malikis, Shafi'is, and Hanbalis: A condition for validity. It is not permissible to appoint a transgressor or a mere follower (muqallid) unless absolutely necessary. Hanafis: A condition for preference. It is valid to appoint a transgressor, although a just and mujtahid (one capable of independent reasoning) person is more preferable. Physical Soundness: The majority of jurists: Conditions for assumption of office. The leadership of a blind, deaf, or amputee person is not valid from the outset, and such a leader is deposed if these conditions arise, due to their inability to manage the affairs of Muslims. Some scholars: Do not stipulate this, and see no harm in physical defects. This is a weak opinion. Lineage (Qurayshi): The majority: Stipulate that the Imam must be from Quraysh, based on the hadith: "The Imams are from Quraysh." This is the correct view. It is not a condition for the Imam to be Hashemite or Alawi, by agreement of the four schools of thought.
