In Arabic, "shaf" (شفع) means an even number or a pair, and "watr" (وتر) means an odd number or single.

The established Sunnah prayers after the Isha prayer are: 1. The post-Isha Sunnah (two rakahs). 2. Qiyam al-Layl (night prayer, performed two rakahs at a time). 3. Witr (one, three, five, seven, or nine rakahs).
