How authentic is the Hadith: "The ink of a scholar's pen is holier than the blood of a martyr"?

The Fatwa's Summary: The hadith stating the ink of scholars is superior to the blood of martyrs is not authentic, as it has been transmitted through weak or fabricated chains of narration, as affirmed by a number of imams. No authentic text has been reported that favors the ink of scholars over the blood of martyrs, while authentic texts have been reported detailing the virtues of the martyr's blood. It is fair to say that the characteristics attributed to the martyr have not been similarly attributed to the scholar merely for his knowledge. The highest rank of perfection after prophethood is Siddiqiyah (truthfulness and steadfastness in faith). So, if Siddiqiyah — which is the perfection of faith in what the Messenger brought, in knowledge, affirmation, and practice — is combined in a scholar or a martyr, then that person is superior.
