What is the ruling on taking off the thobe and wearing trousers without need, and in workplaces that do not permit it, and what is the ruling on replacing the thobe with tight trousers, and what is the response to those who say that the thobe was not the garment of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?

Some parts of the body must be covered, such as the awrah (intimate parts), while others do not require covering. Based on this, there is no impediment for a man to wear only trousers if they are modest, provided he is not performing salat (prayer), especially if the nature of his work requires it. A man's chest is not awrah. However, it is not appropriate to wear tight trousers that define the awrah, unless there is a loose garment worn over them. It is never permissible to mock a Muslim under any circumstances. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not limit himself to one type of clothing. The basic principle regarding clothing is permissibility, except for what the Sharia has prohibited. A Muslim must avoid wearing the following:

1. What the Sharia explicitly prohibits, such as silk for men or clothing with images of animate beings.

2. What reveals the awrah, such as thin clothing.

3. A man wearing clothing that imitates women, and vice versa.

4. Wearing clothing that imitates disbelievers.

5. Wearing a garment of fame (thawb al-shuhrah).

Anything other than these is permissible in principle.
