What is the amount of the fasting fidyah and the fasting expiation (kaffarah)?

Jurists differ regarding the obligatory amount of food for fidyah (expiatory feeding) and kaffarah (expiation). The most common opinion is that the obligation is one mudd of food for each indigent person, which is approximately 750 grams.

Thus, the expiation for intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan is to feed sixty indigent persons, one mudd for each.

As for the expiation for delaying the making up of missed Ramadan fasts without a valid excuse until another Ramadan begins, and the fidyah required for a sick person whose recovery is not expected, and the elderly person unable to fast, and the pregnant or breastfeeding woman if they fear harm to their children, the amount for these is to feed one indigent person for each day.

The value of the fidyah or kaffarah can be handed over in cash to charitable organizations, so they can purchase and distribute the food.
