Is the wife sinful for saying to her husband, "What will I eat if I stay home? And who will buy my clothes and medicine?" when he asked her to quit her job, knowing that she has been supporting the household and her personal needs for some time, and he is unemployed?

Marital life should be based on cooperation and understanding, which fulfills the objective of Islam regarding marriage: the stability of the Muslim family. Allah Almighty says: "And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought." The wife's maintenance is obligatory upon the husband. If the husband does not fulfill this duty, the wife has the right to work without her husband's permission. The wife's service to her husband is obligatory upon her concerning what is customary. The husband does not have the right to abuse and impose upon his wife what burdens her, especially if she is working to help him with his duties, and his boycotting her is an ingratitude. A woman must consider her husband's feelings. If the wife does not neglect her husband's right, then she is not sinful. Patience and seeking wisdom in dealing and striving for reconciliation are recommended.
