Do children who are not cared for by their parents (due to illness, addiction, or abandonment) fall within the definition of "orphan," so that they may be sponsored by charitable organizations?

Islam encourages doing good deeds and helping those in need, including children abandoned by their parents. These children are to be treated as orphans, and their sponsorship is a deed of great reward. The sponsorship of these children depends on the conditions set by the funding entities for charitable organizations. If they stipulate the sponsorship of specific orphans, their conditions are considered valid according to Sharia. However, if they do not impose such conditions, then sponsoring these children and raising them with Islamic morals is one of the best ways to spend money, and it carries a great reward, for "whoever saves a life, it is as if he saved all of mankind."
