Should I wear an abaya over the Ihram?

Scholars differed regarding the pilgrim in a state of ihram wearing an abaya or similar garments (such as a qaba’ or bisht) over the ihram:

The Hanafī and Hanbalī schools of thought: It is permissible for the pilgrim in ihram to wear it if he drapes it over his shoulders and does not put his hands into the sleeves. The Malikī and Shāfi‘ī schools of thought: Whoever wears it is required to offer a fidyah (expiatory offering), even if he does not put his hands into its sleeves, because it is a tailored garment worn in the customary way.

The more preponderant opinion is that if one needs to wear an abaya over the ihram, for instance, due to severe cold, there is no objection, provided that one does not put one’s hands into the sleeves. However, if there is no need, there is no reason to do so, and refraining from wearing it is more cautious.
