Is it possible to interpret the Hadith: "The womb is attached to the hip-girdle (haqw) of the Most Merciful" literally? And is Sufyan ibn Uyaynah's interpretation of the Hadith: "The last step trod by the Most Merciful was in Wajj" to mean the last غزوة (military expedition) undertaken by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, correct?

The Muslim's creed concerning their Lord is transcendence without denial, and affirmation of attributes without resemblance. So, we affirm what Allah and His Messenger affirmed, and we deny what Allah and His Messenger denied, and we remain silent concerning what was neither affirmed nor denied. Among what has been affirmed is the hadith of Abu Hurairah in the Two Sahihs regarding the womb holding onto the Loins of the Most Merciful, and the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Are you not pleased that I should connect with whoever connects with you, and cut off whoever cuts you off?" This is one of the ahadith of attributes that are passed on as they came, and are understood according to their apparent meaning. As for the second hadith, it is what Ahmad narrated from Ya'la al-Amiri that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said about al-Hasan and al-Husain: "Indeed, a child is a cause of miserliness and cowardice, and the last crushing blow the Most Merciful, عز وجل, struck was in Wajj." Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah interpreted it as the last military campaign waged by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, which was against the people of Ta'if. He likened it to the Prophet's saying, peace and blessings be upon him: "O Allah, intensify Your crushing blow against Mudar."
