What is the ruling on one who says: "Allah is my witness that I have repented from music," then disobeys Allah by listening to it?

The statement "God is my witness, I have repented from music" has two cases:

- If the speaker says this while being untruthful, meaning they have not truly repented: This is a grave sin and a fabrication against God. It may even amount to disbelief in the view of some scholars if the intent is that God knows something contrary to reality, because in that case, God is being attributed with ignorance.

- If the speaker says this while being truthful in their repentance, then their soul overcomes them and they return to listening: There is no fault in their initial statement because they were truthful at that time. However, they incur sin by returning to listening and must renew their repentance. Their first repentance is not invalidated.

If the speaker says this intending it as a covenant upon which God is made a witness, then its ruling is that of a vow (nadhr). If they fail to fulfill it, an expiation for breaking an oath (kaffarat yameen) becomes obligatory.
