Where does the spirit of the deceased go after the two angels question it?

The dwelling places of souls after death are numerous and vary according to the state of the souls. Some are within the crops of green birds, roaming in Paradise. Some are confined at the gate of Paradise or in the grave due to sins or debt. Some are at the gate of Paradise, receiving their sustenance from Paradise. Some are in lamps or seek shelter beneath the Throne. The souls of fornicators, male and female, are confined in a furnace of fire, and those who consume usury swim in a river of blood. Despite the variation in their dwelling places, souls maintain a connection with the body on earth. Scholars have differed in specifying these places: some believe they are in Paradise, or at its gate, or at the entrance of graves, or sent forth, going wherever they wish, or that they are to the right and left of Adam, or in Al-Jābiyah, or in the well of Zamzam, or in an isthmus of the earth, or in Sijjīn, or where they were before the creation of their bodies. Souls in the Barzakh (interim state) vary: the souls of prophets are in the highest Illiyyīn, some martyrs are in the crops of green birds, some are prevented from entering Paradise due to debt, and some are confined in their graves or on earth, or in the furnace of fornicators, male and female, or in the river of blood for those who consume usury.
