The answer

Islam views marriage as a source of tranquility, affection, and mercy, and dislikes the dissolution of the contract except out of extreme necessity. The Quran calls for deliberation and patience, even in cases of aversion. Allah Almighty said: "But perhaps you hate a thing and Allah puts much good in it." The spouses should not hasten to divorce at the first thought or whim. Umar ibn al-Khattab said to a man who wanted to divorce his wife because he did not love her: "Woe to you! Are homes built only on love? Where is care, and where is responsibility?"

If the matter escalates to discord and aversion, divorce is not the first solution. Rather, an attempt at reconciliation should be made through arbitration by family members, as Allah Almighty said: "And if you fear dissension between the two, send an arbitrator from his people and an arbitrator from her people. If they both desire reconciliation, Allah will cause agreement between them." If these mediations fail and the continuation of married life becomes impossible, then it is wise to end it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) urged kind treatment of women and enjoined it, saying: "The best of you is the best to his family, and I am the best of you to my family," and "Treat women kindly, for woman was created from a bent rib," and "Let no believing man hate a believing woman. If he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another."
