If everything is written on the Preserved Tablet before a person's birth, and whoever Allah guides, none can misguide him, and whoever He leaves astray, none can guide him, then why is a person punished for his deeds if wretchedness and entry into Hellfire are already decreed for him?

Belief in divine decree (Qada') and destiny (Qadar) does not mean that a person is compelled; rather, he possesses ability, will, choice, and acquisition. Both religious texts (Shar') and reality (Waqi') attest to this. As for the religious texts, Allah Almighty has affirmed for the servant will and intention, and has attributed actions to him, as in His saying: "Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter," and "So whoever wills - let him believe; and whoever wills - let him disbelieve," and "Whoever does righteousness - it is for his [own soul]; and whoever does evil - it is against it. And never is your Lord a tyrant to His servants." As for reality, every person knows the difference between his voluntary actions, such as eating and drinking, and what happens to him against his will, such as shivering. And since a person has will and choice, his accountability is based on what falls under his choice and will.
