Is the interpretation of dreams considered a fatwa, and what is the difference between a fatwa and interpretation?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Interpretation of dreams is not a fatwa in the conventional sense among scholars. A fatwa is the pronouncement of a Sharia ruling, whereas dream interpretation is an expression of a vision based on the viewer's understanding and does not establish a Sharia ruling. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did interpret visions. However, the linguistic meaning of the word "fatwa" includes clarifying ambiguities and answering questions and visions, as indicated by Allah Almighty's statement in the story of Joseph: "The matter about which you inquired has been decreed."
