Should the large layer of hair that covers the face be washed with the face only, or with both the face and the hair?

The boundary of the face lengthwise is from the usual hairline to the bottom of the jawbones (the lower jaws), and عرضًا (widthwise) from ear to ear.

If a layer of head hair is washed with the face, and this does not prevent water from reaching the skin, then the ablution (wudu) is valid. However, if it prevents water from reaching [the skin], then the ablution is incomplete and the prayer is invalid according to the majority of scholars (jumhur), and it must be repeated.

The boundaries of the head begin from the usual hairline. It is prescribed to wipe it in ablution and not prescribed to wash it. What is required is to wipe the roots of the hair from its beginning to its end. If the hair is tied up, it must be untied to wipe the roots of the hair. As for the ends of long hair (braids), it is not necessary to wipe them in ablution, though they must be washed in the ritual bath (ghusl) for major impurity (janabah) and menstruation (hayd).
