What is courage in Islam? And how does one become courageous?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Linguistically, courage is the steadfastness of the heart in times of adversity. Terminologically, it is the heart's firmness and stability in the face of fears and calamities. It stems from patience and good faith.

Scholars have clarified that courage manifests in sacrificing oneself to defend the religion, sacred values, the neighbor seeking refuge, the oppressed, and to protect wealth and honor from injustice, and in all paths of truth. It is emphasized that recklessness is sacrificing oneself for worldly gain.

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was the bravest of people, and he demonstrated his courage in numerous situations.

To cultivate courage, one can follow several factors, including: strong faith and steadfastness upon it, contemplating the lives of courageous individuals, boldness in speaking the truth, enjoining good and forbidding evil, self-control in anger, glorifying religious commands, honoring Allah's sacred injunctions, taking initiative in situations that require it, and aiding the oppressed.
