How can one be among those of firm resolve who avoid sins and do good deeds, and who speak, do, and hear nothing but the truth, despite the difficulty of achieving that?
To tread the straight path, one must strive against their lower self to obey Allah, seek His help, make abundant supplications, keep company with the righteous, attend gatherings of knowledge and remembrance, and persevere in this until they attain the joy of obedience and the sweetness of faith. Allah says: "And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good." (29:69). Most virtues are acquired, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Knowledge is acquired through learning, and forbearance through practicing forbearance. Whoever seeks good will be given it, and whoever seeks protection from evil will be protected." He also said: "Whoever seeks abstinence, Allah will make him abstinent; and whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient; and whoever seeks patience, Allah will make him patient. And no one has been given a gift better and more expansive than patience." Therefore, adhere to the obligatory duties, especially congregational prayer, recite and ponder the Quran, remember Allah, and draw near to Him through acts of obedience. This will bring tranquility to the heart, expansion to the breast, comfort to the soul, and rectitude to the limbs.
