The science of Hadith is divided into two parts: 'Ilm al-Hadith Riwayah (the science of Hadith narration) and 'Ilm al-Hadith Dirayah (the science of Hadith scrutiny).

'Ilm al-Hadith Riwayah is a science that encompasses the sayings, actions, tacit approvals, and characteristics of the Prophet, as well as their narration, meticulous recording, and precise articulation. It investigates the narration of Hadith, their accurate recording, the study of their chains of transmission (asanid), and the determination of the status of each Hadith.

As for 'Ilm al-Hadith Dirayah (also called Mustalah al-Hadith, Usul al-Hadith, or 'Ulum al-Hadith), it is the science comprising rules by which the conditions of the isnad (chain of narration) and the matn (text) are known, in terms of acceptance or rejection. 'Ilm Dirayat al-Hadith leads to the general knowledge of what is acceptable and what is rejected, through general rules, whereas 'Ilm Riwayat al-Hadith examines specific Hadith by applying those rules.
