Does a divorce occur if it was in response to the husband's mother's command?

A divorce issued by a responsible husband, acting by his own choice, is effective, whether it was in response to his mother’s command or someone else’s. If the mother commands her son to separate from his wife, he is not obligated to obey her, and he should not divorce his wife as long as their relationship is sound and the wife is righteous.

Ibn Muflih said: "Ahmad stated, in the narration of Bakr bin Muhammad from his father: 'If his mother commands him to divorce, I do not approve of him divorcing; because the hadith of Ibn Umar pertains to the father.' Ahmad also stated, in the narration of Muhammad bin Musa, that he should not divorce at his mother's command. However, if the father commands him to divorce, he should divorce if the father is just." Sheikh Taqī ad-Dīn said concerning someone whose mother commands him to divorce his wife: "It is not permissible for him to divorce her. Rather, he must treat her kindly, and divorcing his wife is not a form of kindness to her."
