Who is Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As?

Abd Allah ibn Amr ibn al-As embraced Islam before his father and was a companion of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Among his virtues were his abundant worship and vast knowledge. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said about him: "What an excellent household Abd Allah, Abu Abd Allah, and Umm Abd Allah are." He used to write down hadith, which is why he was among the Companions who narrated the most hadith from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He passed away during the nights of al-Harrah in the year 63 AH, though other accounts exist regarding the year and place of his death.
