Can Satan be present at the time of death to cause a person to die as an unbeliever, even if all his life he had performed the deeds of the people of Paradise?

The Holy Quran mentions Iblis’s vow to tempt and mislead humans, as he strives to exploit weaknesses, especially during severe trials and distress. At the time of death (Sakarat al-Mawt), which is a great and intense stage, Satan tries to exploit it to corrupt the dying person’s faith. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sought refuge from the Devil's tripping up at the time of death to teach Muslims. "Tripping up" here means corruption, encompassing the corruption of the mind and religion, and an attempt to prevent the dying person from repenting. The Devil’s temptation at this hour is severe due to the dying person’s exhaustion and distress.

Some scholars have mentioned that Satan may appear in the form of the dying person’s most beloved people to call him to disbelief, but this has not been authentically established by a sound hadith; rather, it falls under the category of whispering. However, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned that the presentation of religions to the dying person is not a universal occurrence for everyone, though it did happen to some righteous individuals.

A Muslim should prepare for the day of death by performing good deeds. Allah protects His believing servant and diverts misguidance from him, for Satan only trips up those who turned away from Allah during their lives.
