What is the ruling on a husband having sexual intercourse with his wife in a room containing a copy of the Qur’an, and is this considered a degradation of the Qur’an if no other room is available?

Scholars have unanimously agreed on the obligation to safeguard and respect the Mus'haf (copy of the Qur'an). Disrespecting the Qur'an occurs by throwing it on the ground, or in impure places, or by stepping on it, or spitting on it. However, a husband's intercourse with his wife in a room containing a Mus'haf is not considered disrespect; no scholar has ever reported prohibiting marital relations in a room where a Mus'haf is present.

A man once asked Ibn 'Abbas: "Shall I place the Mus'haf on the bed on which I have intercourse?" He replied: "Yes."

The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta' stated that it is permissible for a person to recite the Qur'an in a bedroom and in bed, provided he is not in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah). He may also read from the Mus'haf if he has ablution (wudu').
