What are the types of reliance on God, along with the ruling for each type?
Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned that the disparity among people in their reliance on Allah (tawakkul) depends on their aspirations and intentions. His (Allah's) allies rely on Him for faith and the victory of His religion. Below them are those who rely on Him for their steadfastness and the preservation of their state with Allah. And there are those who rely on Him for sustenance and well-being. The best form of reliance is reliance in fulfilling obligations, and the most beneficial is reliance in external influence for a religious benefit or to ward off a harm, which is the reliance of the prophets and their inheritors. Whoever genuinely relies on Allah for something will attain it. If it is beloved, the outcome is praiseworthy. If it is disliked, it will be harmful to him. If it is permissible, the benefit of reliance is achieved, without the benefit of what he relied upon, unless he sought assistance from it in his obedience to Allah.
