Is Zakat obligatory on an apple crop that reaches 60 tons annually, and when can the produce of this orchard be sold?

The majority of scholars hold that apples are not subject to zakat. Zakat is only obligatory on their price if a year has passed over it and it reaches the nisab on its own, or when combined with other money or trade goods. The nisab amount is equivalent to eighty-five grams of gold, or five hundred and ninety-five grams of silver. The obligatory amount to be given is a quarter of a tenth (two and a half percent). It is permissible to sell the crop once its ripeness becomes apparent.
