If the gold owned is not for trade, then what matters is its weight, and its nisab is 85 grams. However, if it is for trade, then its value matters. If its value reaches the nisab of gold or silver, zakat becomes obligatory on it. This is what Ibn Qudamah preferred. The nisab of silver is 595 grams. The fatwa adopted by us is that, regarding the value for zakat, one refers to what is most beneficial for the poor, between the nisabs of gold or silver.
