Is it permissible to pay the zakat on gold jewelry based on the silver nisab?
Source: FtawySummarized from the full answer at Ftawy · imported Sep 2, 2026
Scholars have differed concerning zakat on jewelry intended for adornment. The preponderant opinion is that there is no zakat on it. However, giving zakat is more cautious, to avoid the difference of opinion. If the jewelry is for adornment, then weight is the criterion. If it reaches 85 grams, zakat becomes obligatory on it. However, if the jewelry is for trade, zakat becomes obligatory on it if its value reaches the nisab of silver or gold. The fatwa adopted by us is that the value for zakat purposes should refer to what is most beneficial for the poor, from either the nisab of gold or silver.
