How did a devil dare approach the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when he feared 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him?

The hadith, "The devil never encountered you traversing a path except that he took a path other than yours," concerning the virtue of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, is authentic. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was in a more perfect state than Umar, for Allah enabled him to control his devil, who then submitted. Ibn Al-Qayyim believes that the Prophet's state was more perfect because he subdued his devil, whereas Umar's devil would flee from him. Al-Kallabadi believes that the devil feared Umar because Umar openly opposed him and was prepared for him. As for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, he neither paid attention to the devil nor feared him, because the devil despaired of ever tempting him or causing him mischief, and felt secure from his punishment. Thus, the devil would approach him out of delusion, yet could not harm him.
