What are the mistakes made by some pilgrims on the Day of Arafat?
It is authentically established that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stayed in Namira on the day of Arafah until the sun passed its meridian. Then he prayed Dhuhr and Asr, combining them in advance (jama' taqdim), in Wadi Urnah. Afterwards, he stood at Arafah facing the Qiblah, remembering Allah and supplicating to Him until sunset.
Among the mistakes committed by pilgrims in Arafah are: 1. Not raising their voices with the Talbiyah on their journey from Mina to Arafah. 2. Some pilgrims descending outside the boundaries of Arafah and remaining there until sunset. This invalidates their Hajj, based on the Prophet's saying, peace and blessings be upon him: "Hajj is Arafah." 3. Some pilgrims facing the mountain where the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, stood, when the Sunnah is to face the Qiblah during supplication. 4. Some believing it is necessary to go to the spot where the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, stood near the mountain and stand there, despite his saying, peace and blessings be upon him: "I stood here, and all of Arafah is a standing place." 5. The mistaken belief that cutting trees in Arafah is religiously forbidden, similar to the prohibition of hunting during Ihram. The correct view is that there is no harm in cutting them unless they are planted for public benefit. 6. Some pilgrims believing in a special sanctity for the mountain where the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stood, and climbing it and seeking blessings from it. This is an innovation that contradicts the Sunnah. 7. Some assuming the necessity of praying Dhuhr and Asr in congregation with the Imam in the mosque, even though all of Arafah is a standing place and prayer is permissible anywhere within it. 8. Some leaving Arafah before sunset, which is a grave error and a violation of the Prophet's action, peace and blessings be upon him. 9. Wasting time in useless conversations or those involving backbiting and gossip. It is better, after the sun passes its meridian, to engage in remembrance of Allah, supplication, and reciting the Quran.
