What is the 'Atirah? And what is its ruling?

Al-Atirah is defined as a sacrifice that the people of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era) used to slaughter in Rajab. Scholars differed regarding its ruling, with some opinions stating that it is recommended (the view of Imam Al-Shafi'i, who cited Ahadith such as: "Al-Atirah is a right"). Others held that it is neither recommended nor disliked. Yet others considered it disliked or forbidden (the view of the majority of scholars, who cited the Hadith: "There is no fara' nor atirah," and maintained that it was a practice of Jahiliyyah that was abrogated). Some scholars believe that the Ahadith permitting it were from the early days of Islam and were subsequently abrogated, and that the prohibition against it indicates its invalidity.
