What is the ruling on remaining in a low-paying job that does not meet basic needs, given the difficulty of finding an alternative?

Tribulation benefits the believer in their religion and their worldly life; it strengthens their connection with Allah, elevates their ranks, and expiates their sins. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Wondrous is the affair of the believer, for there is good in every matter of his… If he is met with prosperity, he thanks Allah and it is good for him; and if he is met with adversity, he shows patience and it is good for him." Every calamity that befalls a Muslim is an expiation for their sins. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "No fatigue, nor disease… befalls a Muslim, but Allah expiates with it some of his sins."

Imam Al-Ghazali mentioned five blessings of tribulation: 1. The calamity could have been greater than it is. 2. The calamity was not in matters of religion. 3. Worldly calamities expiate sins, and whoever is punished in this world will not be punished again. 4. The calamity was destined to happen, and it has occurred and passed. 5. The reward for the calamity is greater than the calamity itself, as it is a path to the reward of the hereafter.

Therefore, one should be patient, seek reward from Allah, and turn to Allah with supplication and seeking forgiveness. Allah is near and answers the call of the supplicant. Whoever regularly seeks forgiveness, Allah will make for him a way out of every worry and distress, just as whoever fears Allah, He will make a way out for him and provide for him from where he does not expect.
