What should I do regarding my desire to marry a divorced relative whose wife complains of his mistreatment, despite my family's categorical refusal?
Communication and exchange of admiring words between relatives are impermissible and open a door to fitna (temptation/strife). One must repent and sever this communication. If a man curses religion, he is an apostate (murtad), and it is not permissible to marry him unless he repents. If he repents, then it is permissible to marry him, and one can try to convince the family or refer the matter to the competent authorities in cases of ‘adl (obstruction of marriage). If marriage is not facilitated, then he should be left, and one should seek another husband from Allah. One must beware of quarreling with family, especially the mother, and repent from disobeying parents. Also, one must be extremely cautious about contemplating suicide or attempting it.
