Is it permissible for a father to stipulate that his daughter's husband pay a sum of money as compensation if he divorces her after the marriage?

The Sharia does not specify a fixed amount for dowries; rather, whatever the spouses agree upon is permissible. However, the Sunnah indicates the legitimacy of reducing dowries to facilitate marriage and encourage chastity among young men and women, as excessive dowries hinder marriage. Lenience in dowries and wedding feasts is desirable because it is among the reasons for increasing marriages and preserving the chastity of men and women. If the spouses agree upon a specific dowry, it becomes binding, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Indeed, the most deserving of conditions to be fulfilled are those by which you make sexual relations lawful." If an deferred amount is stipulated to be paid upon divorce, the husband is obligated to pay it, unless the sane woman waives it, based on Allah's saying: "And that you pardon is nearer to righteousness," and His saying: "But if they give up willingly to you anything of it, consume it in satisfaction and ease." Therefore, conditions between spouses in marriage are valid and binding if they conform to the Sharia, including both prompt and deferred dowries.
