Does one expiation become obligatory, or several expiations, for one who engaged in intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan on several days and forgot their number? And does he transition to feeding [the poor] due to the multitude of fasts? And what is the ruling for one who adopted the view of the obligation of expiation in a state of obsessive doubt?

"Whoever intentionally has intercourse during the daytime in Ramadan has committed a grave sin and must repent. The expiation (kaffara) is repeated for each day that intercourse was intentionally performed. However, some scholars are of the view that a single expiation suffices if multiple expiations become due. If one forgets the number of expiations, they should expiate based on what they most likely believe will absolve their responsibility.

The expiation for intercourse is in sequence: freeing a slave, then fasting for two consecutive months, then feeding sixty needy persons. It is not permissible to move to feeding unless one is unable to fast. The preponderant opinion is that among the things that break the fast, only intercourse necessitates the major expiation."
