Is a husband entitled to compel his wife to reside in a specific place?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The husband must provide his wife with a suitable, independent dwelling according to his means, as Allah Almighty says: "Lodge them where you dwell, according to your means, and do not dislodge them to distress them." It is not permissible to compel the wife to live with her in-laws or relatives. However, she should agree if her husband asks her to, especially if he is not well-off or if his parents need him close by, and she will have a great reward for doing so. If the husband provides the legitimate and suitable dwelling, then the wife does not have the right to refuse it, unless she had stipulated in the marriage contract that the dwelling should be in a specific location.
