Did the Qur’an descend with the different recitations, what is the wisdom behind their multiplicity, and why were they attributed to specific reciters and not directly to the Prophet?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Gabriel used to descend with the Qur’an upon the heart of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, in a clear Arabic tongue. Allah Almighty has clarified that He revealed it in the language of the Arabs, with its various dialects, to facilitate matters for the Ummah. Thus, He revealed it in seven ahruf (modes/readings). These seven ahruf are not the seven well-known qira’at (recitations) common today. The Arabs were permitted to recite it in their languages to facilitate understanding and alleviate hardship, with the emphasis that this permission was based on hearing directly from the Prophet, peace be upon him, not on personal desire. Attributing a recitation to an imam or a narrator is only due to his prominence in it, as all recitations are authentically established from the Prophet, peace be upon him.
