How many recitations of the Holy Quran were narrated from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?

Scholars have greatly differed on the meaning of the Hadith: "Gabriel recited to me in one harf (mode of recitation), and I continued asking him for more until he recited to me in seven ahruf (modes of recitation)." Later, scholars conventionally divided the Quranic recitations into seven qira'at (readings), and common people mistakenly believed these to be the seven ahruf mentioned in the Hadith, which contradicts the consensus of the scholars. Some scholars wished they had been given a different name to remove the ambiguity. Then, scholars conventionally divided the recitations into ten, all of which are mutawatir (transmitted by multiple chains of narration). The difference between the Quran and the qira'at is that the Quran is the revelation sent down to Muhammad (peace be upon him) for exposition and miraculousness, while the qira'at are the variations in the wording of the revelation, either in the spelling of letters or in their manner, such as lightening or heavy pronunciation.
