The basic principle regarding translation is permissibility. It is permissible to translate political or sports news as long as it is free from forbidden content. As for articles promoting atheism or stories of immorality, it is not permissible to translate them except for the purpose of refuting them. The Imams criticized Al-Ma'mun for translating books of philosophers, due to the subsequent spread of innovations and errant beliefs.
