Do the sounds a woman heard in her apartment, the opening and closing of the window, and her feeling of shivers have any basis [in reality]? And what is the legal validity of placing a bag of sugar in front of the bathroom at night to determine the presence of 'afarit (jinn/demons)? And can 'afarit be present while the Noble Qur'an is being recited?

What the woman felt might be an illusion or from the jinn, and what the caller mentioned has no basis. Protection from devils is achieved by seeking refuge in Allah from their evil, remembering Allah, and reciting the Qur'an. Allah says: "And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah." (Qur'an 7:200). Satan flees from a house in which Surat Al-Baqarah is recited. While evil spirits (afareet) can be present when the Qur'an is played, maintaining remembrances (adhkar) and reciting Surat Al-Baqarah protects a person from them and drives away Satan.
