The answer

It is obligatory upon every Muslim to love Allah Almighty more than they love themselves. This is achieved by knowing His Names and Attributes, for the soul is innately inclined to love perfection, and Allah is described with all perfection, and is free from all deficiencies. Ibn Al-Qayyim mentioned that among the reasons for divine love is "the heart's contemplation of His Names and Attributes, observing them, and knowing them." Thus, the love of Allah Almighty stems from His being characterized by the beautiful Names and the sublime Attributes.

Knowing Allah's Attributes leads a person to hope for His bounty and reward, like the attributes of beauty (forgiveness and mercy), and to fear Him and beware of His punishment, like the attributes of majesty (intense wrath and vengeance). This leads to performing the servitude befitting each Name and Attribute. So, we repent to Him because He is The Ever-Forgiving (Al-Tawwab), and we guard our tongues because He is The All-Hearing (Al-Sami'), and our limbs because He is The All-Seeing (Al-Basir). This is part of the meaning of supplicating to Allah by His beautiful Names, and part of the meaning of "enumerating" the beautiful Names mentioned in the hadith, which means acting according to the implications of these Names and embodying their effects.
