Is a wife considered divorced the moment she arrives at her family's home after her husband stipulated her divorce upon her arrival, then the husband retracted his intention and later reconciled with her? And what is the expiation required of him if she is divorced, and what should be done, given that the spouses are in two different countries?

Scholars have differed regarding the phrase "consider her divorced" (اعتبريها طالقًا) as to whether a divorce takes place through it or not. The more preponderant opinion is that it is one of the ambiguous expressions (kinayat) of divorce, and therefore, it does not effect a divorce unless there is an intention to divorce. The husband knows best his own intention.

If divorce was intended, then the intention for divorce and the reason for it have an impact. So, if he intended to divorce her because of her travel during a dispute, she is not divorced by her travel after the dispute has ended and reconciliation has occurred.

We advise both spouses to fear Allah, preserve the family unit, and avoid disputes and uttering words of divorce.
