How does one ascertain the Greatest Name of Allah, and is it permissible to experiment with it? Will a supplication made during the "ta'arr" of the night be answered if it is uttered in a low voice while on the bed and for a limited duration? And is it considered "ta'arr" if one intends to wake up and then rises during the night?

Scholars have differed regarding the Greatest Name of Allah, and the most probable opinion is that it is "Allah." Some have held that it is a name not specifically known among the Beautiful Names of Allah, and that the mere answering of a supplication by a particular name does not indicate that it is the Greatest Name.

Regarding the Hadith in Bukhari narrated by 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit concerning the virtue of one who 'ta'arra' (wakes up) at night, 'ta'arra' means waking up with a sound and remembrance of Allah. The Hadith does not stipulate that one should not speak to oneself with the 'ta'ar' for the supplication to be answered; rather, it includes both those who speak to themselves and those who do not. The answering of supplication occurs in one of three ways: the supplication is hastened, it is stored for the Hereafter, or evil similar to it is averted from the supplicant.
