Is a person predestined or free to choose in marriage, and if everything is predestined, then why were we commanded to choose and forbidden from marrying محارم (unmarriageable kin)? And was it predestined for the questioner not to marry the young man who proposed to her, or is she responsible for breaking off the engagement?

It has been previously clarified that a human being can be described by both attributes: he is an active agent with free will, endowed by Allah with intellect, will, and volition; and on the other hand, the decree and divine destiny of Allah apply to him. From the first perspective, he is addressed with the command to be diligent and make good choices, and from the second, he should not lament over what he has missed. The Shar'i (Islamic legal) description combines both, which is facilitation, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Everyone is facilitated for that for which he was created."
