Upon whom is incumbent the marital expenses and the furnishing of the marital home?

If the intention behind "wedding expenses" is the wedding feast (walima), then it is recommended for the husband only, according to his circumstances and without extravagance. As for furnishing the marital home, scholars have differed:

Shafi'is and Hanbalis: The woman is not compelled to provide furnishings. Malikis: The wife is not obligated to furnish the marital home except to the extent of the dowry (mahr) she received in cash before consummation, and she should spend it on purchasing the most essential appliances according to the custom of her locality. Hanafis: The guardian of the woman is responsible for furnishing her with the dowry that was taken, such that the furnishings are typically suitable for a husband of that kind.
