What is meant by the obligatory maintenance owed by the husband to his wife, and does it include devices such as computers and phones, and chocolates, and pocket money, and expenses for the wife's travel to visit her family, and is the husband to be blamed if he does not pay for or accompany her on the trip, thereby preventing her from maintaining ties of kinship?

A husband must spend on his wife with what is customary and reasonable (bi’l-maʿrūf), and this includes housing, food, drink, clothing, medical treatment, medicine, and what a wife uses for adornment, such as oils and other things. As for luxuries, such as a mobile phone, a computer, sweets, a monthly allowance, and travel expenses for the wife to visit her family, these are not obligatory for the husband unless stipulated in the marriage contract or established by custom. Both spouses should treat each other with kindness and goodness, and the husband will be rewarded for his expenditure on his wife if he does so with the intention of seeking reward from Allah.
