To what extent is it true that the Sharia obliges the husband to provide his wife with a standard of living and furnishings similar to what she had in her parents' home, and is it permissible to delay the wedding because of this?

The parity between spouses in financial status is important for the stability of the marital relationship, but it is not a necessary condition, as competency is only considered in religion. As for the marital home and the wife's maintenance, it is determined according to the financial situation of the spouses, whether affluent or in hardship. Allah Almighty's saying: "And upon the father is their provision and their clothing according to what is reasonable" (Quran 2:233) indicates the consideration of the spouses' situation. The statement that the husband must provide housing and a standard of living equivalent to her father's home is not absolute, unless the furniture was part of the dowry and this was agreed upon. In case of dispute, the matter is referred to the Sharia courts for resolution.
