Is it permissible to lie to one's father to gain his satisfaction and avoid his harshness?

Lying is a blameworthy trait, both religiously and customarily, and does not emanate from a believer. The Lawgiver has encouraged truthfulness and warned against lying, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Hold fast to truthfulness, for truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man continues to speak the truth and strives to be truthful until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful person (Siddiq). Beware of lying, for lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Hellfire. A man continues to lie and strives to lie until he is recorded with Allah as a liar (Kadhdhab)." Scholars have permitted lying in certain specific situations, such as to avert a greater harm or to reconcile disputes. If your lie to your father was to avert a greater harm, such as his anger, then it is permissible for you to lie, based on the principle that "necessities permit the forbidden." However, it is preferable to use equivocation and circumlocution.
