What is the remedy for a husband who has developed a covetous desire for what others possess, and what should he do with his wife who yearns for what others have and pushes him for more material gain, after he was once content?
A person strives to provide for his family's needs, while maintaining moderation in doing so, and recognizing that provisions are apportioned by Allah.
One must be careful lest the family lead a man into Sharia transgressions due to their love for adornment and luxury, for some spouses and children can be an enemy in this regard.
Among the solutions to address the longing for what others possess are: strengthening contentment with the apportionment of provisions, realizing that wealth and poverty are trials and not indicators of Allah's love or lack thereof, that good may lie in the withholding of sustenance, and that many who possess wealth live in worry and sorrow.
One should look to those who are of lower worldly status, as this enhances contentment and makes a person appreciate Allah's blessings upon him.
