Maintaining kinship ties is obligatory to the best of one's ability; it is a great good and benefit, and severing these ties is forbidden and one of the major sins. Allah has cursed those who sever kinship ties, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) informed that one who severs kinship ties will not enter Paradise. He also urged kindness to the mother, then the father, then the closest relatives, and so on. Furthermore, maintaining kinship ties increases sustenance and prolongs life. Kinship ties should be maintained through visits, correspondence, phone calls, and financially if the relative is poor, all according to one's capacity.
