The answer

Al-Tirmidhi narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The hand of Allah is with the جماعت (congregation)," and in another narration: "Indeed, Allah will not unite my Ummah upon error, and the hand of Allah is with the جماعة." The meaning here is Allah's care and عناية (solicitude) for them. Scholars have differed on the exact meaning of "al-jama'ah" (the congregation), offering five interpretations:

1. The vast majority of Muslims: These are the saved among the sects. Whatever they agree upon regarding their religion is the truth, and whoever opposes them dies a death of ignorance. 2. The community of imams of mujtahid scholars: Those whom Allah has made a proof for all people. 3. The Companions in particular. 4. The community of Muslims if they agree on a matter: These are the ones for whom Allah guaranteed to His Prophet that He would not unite them upon error. 5. The community of Muslims when they gather under a leader (amir): This is the view chosen by Al-Tabari.

All these interpretations revolve around two main axes: adherence (to the Sunnah) and the consideration that the People of Sunnah are those meant by the hadiths.
