How can the saying of some scholars be reconciled, that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not mention the meanings of the disconnected letters, with what is stated in the Holy Quran that its verses have been expounded for people, as in verse (1) of Surat Hud and verse (3) of Surat Fussilat?

Allah Almighty described His Book as "detailed" (mufassal), and this does not contradict the presence of the disconnected letters at the beginning of some surahs, for several reasons:

1. Detailing (tafṣīl) is a description of theurah as a whole, not of all its words. The Qur'an itself stated the existence of ambiguous (mutashābihāt) verses that are referred back to the clear (muḥkamāt) ones.

2. The detailing of the verses of the Book does not negate their inclusion of generalization or interpretation. The Qur'an contains what elucidates this generalization.

3. The disconnected letters are openings to the surahs and are not part of their main context. The description of being clear (iḥkām) and detailed (tafṣīl) often comes immediately after them.

4. The Qur'an is "detailed" for those firmly rooted in knowledge. The disconnected letters and the ambiguous verses fall within the scope of their knowledge.

5. The word "detailing" (al-tafṣīl) has other interpretations besides clarity and elucidation of meaning, such as distinguishing truth from falsehood, or right from wrong, or lawful from unlawful. The presence of the disconnected letters does not impede these distinctions.
